My
wife, a non-fisher, and I spent our vacation in the British W. Indies.
What a place we found. We stayed at Coral Gardens on the island of Providenciales
(Provo) where we found ourselves overlooking a coral reef. The reef started
within yards of the beach, and every day we went snorkeling looking for
new and different fish. Within a hundred yards of the beach we saw, resident
sea turtles, barracuda, triggerfish, barracuda, octopus, tangs, jacks,
and a 5 skate. Known primarily as one of the top 5 diving destinations
in the world, our beach did nothing to refute this. We found a new (and
good) restaurant every night, but felt that Cocos was the finest
on the island, which is not to take away from the other fine dining that
we did.
Of course, I went fishing for bones, and after I got the hang of it, it
was my first time bonefishing, the catching improved dramatically. Over
the course of two mornings it became very apparent to me that I was fishing
with the most respected bonefish guide on the island of Provo. Capt. Barr
Gardner did everything the way it was meant to be, as we moved to a different
flat as the tides rolled in, catching the prime fishing time in each area.
I heard nothing but good things about him from everyone who asked what
we were doing in T&C besides sunning ourselves.
The highlight of the fishing was an 8 lb. bone that was foraging in some
turtle grass. These fish are so lightly pressured, that he gave me a couple
of chances to get the fly right where he wanted it before he decided to
eat. We also decided to give marlin fishing a try, we were there at the
peak of marlin season (middle of July), we did not fly fish for them but
it was interesting. We had one fish come up and follow a teaser for a
while, but then he returned to the depths. That was very exciting as well.
The whole experience of T&C is something I will never forget, and
if it werent for the two day trip to get there, we would go back
all the time. There was great food, great snorkeling (or diving) and great
bonefishing.
