Rotoroa
Lodge
With conviction, George says, It is by far THE nicest, best fishing
lodge I have ever seen or been in. Located on the South Island of
New Zealand in the Nelson Forest District (via Auckland), Rotoroa Lodge
can be described as on the high side of 5 star accommodations. Each morning
your guide will drive you to your fishing destination, and from there
you and your guide will hike up the river. The lore of New Zealand is
sight fishing to huge fish, and that is why a guide is essential.
The guides will take you to either the large name rivers, or small rivers
depending on the fishing pressure. It is estimated that every ¼
mile you will see one fish, and chances are it will be a big one. Our
eyes either saw nothing, or everything under the surface looked like a
fish. As your eyes play tricks on yourself, it is great to have a guide
to bounce your visions off of for verification.
The highlight of our trip was sight fishing to a very large brown trout
on one of the smaller rivers in the area. As it turned out, the fish we
were fishing to was a very feisty 9 lb. brown trout who was kind enough
to eat a #18 yellow soft hackle.
