Alaska Fly Fishing
Owned by Jeff Puente, WAFF offers one of the finest fishing experiences
available to the traveling angler. WAFF consists of two camps, the Main
Camp on the banks of the Nushagak River, and the Wilderness Camp on the
King Salmon River. The advantage of being on the river itself, instead
flying out every day cannot be overstated. Regardless of weather conditions,
you are guaranteed to be out fishing, as all the travel from the camp
is done by jet boat. You are also treated to meals that make you forget
that you are 150 miles from the nearest town.
The fishing is phenomenal too. We arrived in early July, which coincided
with the King runs on these rivers, but we focused mainly on the large
rainbows in these rivers. We also were able to catch other species including
dolly varden, grayling, and chum salmon throughout the week. The average
fish ranged from 18-22 inches, with very few fish below that size, and
many exceeding it. The king salmon fishing was all sight fishing with
floating lines, but have a sink tip just in case.
The highlights of this trip were numerous. Was it the Grizzly with her
three cubs strolling up the far bank of the King Salmon River while we
were eating breakfast? Was it the mousing? One of the two rods in the
boat had on a mouse pattern at all times, and consistently caught big
rainbows (watching a rainbow hit a mouse never gets old). Or was it the
biggest fish of the week? My brother Dave sight fished to a 27.5
10 lb. rainbow trout, who finally gave in to a dead drifted flesh fly.
If you are looking for a tremendous AK experience, we strongly recommend
that you get in touch with Jeff.
